Make the 3.5 × 4.5 cm photo for an Indian passport application, or the square 2 × 2 inch photo for an Indian visa or OCI card, sized to the official rules in your browser.
From the government pages linked below, checked on October 14, 2026. Rules change, so check the official page before you apply.

At a Passport Seva Kendra or a Post Office Passport Seva Kendra, the photo is taken at the counter, so you don't bring one. A printed 4.5 × 3.5 cm colour photo on a plain white background is needed at some other counters and for children under four. The rules ask for a real photo, not a computer printout, so have it printed on photo paper.
The regular visa form takes a square JPEG of 10 to 300 KB, and the OCI card a square JPEG of up to 200 KB on a light background that isn't white. Both say the photo must not be retouched, so switch off Plain background and keep your own wall. The card saves both at 600 × 600 pixels and fits the file size for you, in your browser.
We can't promise any office will accept a photo; the official rules are linked below so you can check them first.
